Internships (Volunteer with stipend)

Hartland is in the business of investing in people. We invite you to explore one of our internship opportunities this season. We offer internships from September through November and January through May each year. Internships can be as short as 6 weeks and up to the whole season. Interns who are eligible to continue on may request to join us for another internship or apply for summer staff or seasonal positions at the completion of their various programs.

What does our internship program look like? That really depends on which department you select.

Spiritual Focus: Our internships focus on creating and fostering servant-leaders for the church. The best way we can do this is to provide hands-on training that work here at camp but also back down the hill wherever you end up serving. Learning objectives in each area will provide you with real-life skills needed both in ministry and in other areas of life (non-ministry jobs, etc.). Interns are required to attend the weekly staff Bible study, morning devotionals (on working days), and church when time off is provided to do so. Resources will be provided to help foster interns personal relationship with Christ and interns will be mentored by the full time staff and families here at Hartland. The ultimate goal of each internship is to build up Christians who are committed to knowing, living, and sharing a compelling faith

Our Operations Team internship includes work in the following areas: accommodations, maintenance, recreation, painting, landscaping, and at times helping in other areas of camp. As the operations team tasks can vary season to season, this role offers a variety of service projects. Skills an intern can expect to gain in the operations internship include basic safety training, sanitation skills, meeting room/event turnover, housing resets, staffed recreation (examples include Zipline), and a variety of other day-to-day lessons. This is the most flexible of the internships as Operations covers system-critical parts of camp, which can shift the focus in order to meet very specific or time-sensitive needs. We generally have space for 1-2 Operations Interns each season, so apply early!

Our Food Service internship includes a curriculum that walks you through a large variety of the food service operation. This includes room setup/tear-down, dish-room experience, assistant cook, lead cook, and team lead experience. From menu planning, food prep, cooking, leading a meal, and interacting with guests, this is a fully immersive food service experience. Interns will gain a full understanding of the entire food service department and will be trained by our dedicated professional food service staff while working through our established curriculum/workbook. By the conclusion of a full-season internship (at least 3 months), an intern will have led the team in preparing, serving, and cleaning up a meal from start to finish as well as possessing the skills to accomplish each part. We generally have space for 2-3 Food Service Interns each season, apply now!

Our Program Team internship includes assisting the Program Manager and Coordinator with set up and tear down of our sponsored events (Youth Winter, Adult Spring and Fall, Family Camps, etc.). This will also include some hands-on assistance in maintaining our program assets such as boat repair/cleaning, trail maintenance, and other duties assigned by the Program Manager. This internship also includes training in and participation in staffed recreation activities, such as our Zipline, Climbing Wall, etc. We usually have space for 1-2 Program Team Interns per season, space is limited so apply soon!

There may also be times interns will have the opportunity to serve in other departments, developing skills and experience in a broad range of camping areas. Housing will be provided along with meals whenever guest groups are in, and essential food items will also be available between camps. Internships are designed to primarily occur during the busy seasons at camp, so that interns can gain a better hands-on experience through a variety of roles.

Due to housing limitations, internships are limited to single applicants (no couples, no accompanying children), with no pets, and will likely include shared housing with other interns of the same gender.

Interns will earn an optional certificate of completion upon completion of the program. While this is a volunteer internship, Hartland will be providing a $500 monthly stipend to help offset living and travel expenses during your stay. Housing/Utilities and some* meals are included in the internship. Full details will be provided to eligible applicants.
